The Taj Mahal is waiting for your vote

Contributor June 30th, 2007

The countdown to elect seven new wonders of the world and the Taj Mahal needs help. With barely one week to go before voting closes, the competition is heating up.

The New 7 Wonders Society, a Swiss non-profit group, has launched a worldwide online, phone and SMS poll, and released a list of contenders.

Every country is rooting for its monuments, which include the Great Wall of China, the Eiffel Tower and the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil.

While publicity drives in India have been drumming up local support for the Taj, the government has not officially endorsed the campaign.

India certainly has a statistical advantage and enough mobile phone connections to take the Taj higher on the list, but for all the Taj cheerleaders, there are enough people who don’t know or don’t care.

It should be higher up, I think more people should vote. I think it’s great, we have all voted and are getting others to vote too.

Whatever the final decision in Lisbon turns out to be, the Taj Mahal will remain one of the treasured marvels of India and the world.
